Wilderness National Park |
The Wilderness National Park is along the Garden Route, 410km from Port Elizabeth. The National Park is an ecologically unique landscape of rivers, lagoons, saltwater lakes and wetlands. It is a paradise for the bird lover and is one of South Africa's ecologically richest waterbird habitats.
Wilderness National Park stretches from the Touw River mouth to the Swartvlei estuary and beyond.
HISTORICAL SITES
St Aidan's church is one of the oldest buildings in Wilderness. It was named after an Irish saint who was part of a missionary drive to Scotland and England. The church bell was salvaged from SS Thorne, which was wrecked in fog off Robben Island in 1831.
The scenic passes along Wilderness, was completed in 1893 by Thomas Bain.
The Outenique Choo-Tjoe runs between Knysna and George for 67km. Passing through the Wilderness National Park. It is one of the remaining scheduled stream trains and second most beautiful line in the world.
CLIMATE
Wilderness has been blessed with a pleasant, temperate climate. It is the only area in Africa where rainfall occurs throughout the year. Most of the rainfall occur at night. Ideal for visit - all year round.
