It was proclaimed a National Park in 1937, to protect the Cape Mountain Zebra, an endangered species. About 300 Mountain Zebras inhabit the park. This National Park extends over an area of 28000ha and lies on a rocky plateau, a mere 12 km from the small Karoo town of Cradock.
VEGETATION
The vegetation in this area consists of Renosterveld and Fynbos type. The Mountain Zebra National Park contains a rich variety of plant species. After good rains, in the spring, the wildflower blooming can be spectacular.
LATEST NEWS
In February 2007, cheetahs were released in the Mountain Zebra National Park, after being absent from the area for more than 70 years.
The most recent reintroductions also include the black rhino and African buffalo.
You can also find the Black Eagle and the Martial Eagle soaring over this mountain habitat.
