Today over 450 elephants, together with Cape buffalo, black rhino, variety of antelope species, lion and spotted hyena has also been re-introduced to the area. A species unique to the area is the flightless dung beetle.
The original park has subsequently been expanded to include the Woody Cape Nature Reserve that extends from the Sundays River mouth towards Alexandria and a marine reserve, which includes St Croix Island and Bird Island, an important breeding habitat for gannets and penguins, not to mention a large variety f other marine life. Bird Island is home to the world’s largest breeding colony of gannets – about 120 000 birds – and also hosts the second largest breeding colony of African penguins. This forms part of the expansion plan of Addo Elephant National Park, called the Greater Addo Elephant National Park.
This Marine Protected Area was proclaimed to protect important marine resources such as abalone (perlemoen) around Bird Island.
At the National Park’s main camp there are chalets and cottages adapted for use by people with physical impairment. There are access ramps and paths into reception, the shop, and the public toilets and down to the viewing site overlooking the floodlit waterhole. The highlight of the Addo Rest Camp is the PPC Discovery Trail, designed for all people, regardless of physical and sensory impairments. The trail has a boardwalk surface enabling easy movement for wheelchair users and other mobility impaired people. There is a guide rope for length of the trail, to assist the visually impaired.
